So after giving the aforementioned Child’s Armoire to my granddaughter, I was without a dresser. My younger daughter found this terribly beat-up relic in the basement of a store space she was renting. (She is the proud owner of Plastic Chapel, a designer toy store. (Go to www.plasticchapel.com and see – if you like designer collectables, you’ll be wowed!)
Although free, I almost didn’t take the thing – it was quite a mess: several coats of many colors of paint, no drawer pulls, full of deep gouges, and had been left standing in water at some point. I had to re-build parts of the feet and shore up the bottoms of the drawers, which no longer wanted to stay in place long enough to hold anything.
Since I was going to use the piece myself, I started with a pretty simple design. However, working without someone else’s desires to follow, my own kept changing, and I had a great time adding and subtracting things. The drawer runners have been waxed and now move smoothly, the drawer insides sanded and painted with several coats of high gloss paint to remove the need for paper liners and keep the clothing from becoming snagged. It turned out so well I almost decided to keep it downstairs but then I got tired of getting dressed out of boxes every morning.
