This old, old, old trunk was a recent purchase by my clients and was in pretty sad shape. The flower designs were mostly obliterated by wear and the words on the front were almost unintelligible. At some point in its well-used life parts of the designs were apparently touched up a little with paint that didn’t seem to match the original colors. Friends with infra-red film took photos for me that brought out some of the details of what was nearly lost, especially the words “Two Forever 1830” across the front. Other friends, former antique dealers, said it was a Bride’s Trunk (or Dowry Trunk), 1830 being the year the couple was married.
Restoring antiques correctly has its own complex set of rules if a client wants to retain the antique status. This piece was too far gone for that and since the trunk held no old memories for their family, they weren’t concerned with antique status – they simply wanted the trunk to look good again.
They were both thrilled with the results and were kind enough to send me a wonderful note of appreciation. (Although, I hear Mr. Client is a little miffed he’s not allowed to sit on it anymore!)
It wasn’t a family heirloom before, but it is now.
